Coggeshall is a charming and historic market town in Essex that is petite in population but with bucket loads of character.

About the Coggeshall area

Coggeshall can be dated back to an early Saxon settlement. Located eight miles to the east of Braintree, Coggeshall is a lovely little ‘olde worlde’ town with a lot to offer. Coggeshall’s attractive centre is made up of nearly 200 listed buildings, many are timber-framed dating as far back as the 14th century, including Coggeshall’s magnificent ‘wool church’ (St. Peter ad Vincula). Paycockes House is an exceptional example of a 16th century wealthy clothier’s house and Grange Barn, founded in 1140, is all that remains of the former abbey. Both properties are owned by the National Trust.

Like many of the towns in the area Coggeshall had a wool and cloth trade and then subsequently industries of silk and velvet weaving, tambour lace making and brewing. By 1900, the decline of these industries with the rejection of the railway has left a relatively undisturbed town.

Properties In Coggeshall

Coggeshall has one of the largest densities of listed buildings in the area with range of property sizes across the town, from beautiful period homes through to Victorian terraces as well as much more contemporary houses. So whether you are after an 15th century character property that has beams and could be on a postcard or you are looking for an ultimate family-friendly space with open-plan living, then Coggeshall has it all to offer.

Coggeshall Property Prices

Like much of mid-Essex, the pandemic really drove up demand for houses in Essex. Property prices in Coggeshall increased as many people sought to leave London and other more built-up areas. Much of this movement was in search of a more peaceful life in villages with easy access to Colchester, Chelmsford and the capital. With changes to working patterns and more people willing to take a hybrid approach with only a couple of days requiring a commute, Coggeshall is well-placed to provide everything that larger numbers of buyers are looking for.

“I recently sold my house through Martin Webb. It was the best experience I have ever had buying or selling a house – they managed everything, including a slight hiccup with a survey! They were professional, honest and communicated so well with everyone. We got the price we wanted, and they made it all so much easier and less stressful than I have ever experienced. I got weekly updates, never had to chase for information and they showed me why estate agents can be so valuable.”
